Digitally uniting 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members for the common good.

Rotary is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

With over 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide, Rotary has taken on some of the world’s toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations get started. Despite its tremendous impact, its collective contributions were not fully understood by the broader public. Furthermore, advances in technology and a changing landscape - including an influx of micro-causes - made the task of recruiting and retaining members and appealing to strategic partners even more challenging. NorthPoint Digital was tasked with evaluating Rotary’s digital presence - a critical set of touchpoints that drive understanding, create relevance and inspire engagement with the 1.2 million members as well as appeal to millions more.

To ensure future success, Rotary’s main objectives for their site were to provide a common communication platform for a world-wide, multilingual membership base, create a central point of access for a large number of information and management systems, as well as raise public awareness of the organization, its mission and its clubs.

Rotary’s website largely functioned as a repository of information for members. The member and non-member digital experiences needed to be drastically simplified and dramatically amplified on the web and for mobile. For the redesign, our NorthPoint Digital team took the ambitious interface designs put together by branding partner, Siegel+Gale, to produce a world-class social media and marketing platform for an international and multilingual audience.

A unique aspect for this implementation is the Office365/SharePoint 2013 integration, which had just been released during the early stages of the project. The integration module includes a document reference field that allows Office365 documents to be associated with Drupal entities. The module actually authenticates against a SharePoint 2013 REST endpoint to fetch document meta data - which is ultimately stored along with the document references that permit direct download of files that “live” in SharePoint 2013.

There is a tremendous level of multilingual content management across the site. Each piece of content, including photos, news stories, and even archived webinars was translated by a dedicated staff member. Our team created custom dashboards and language negotiation routines to ensure that the translations proceeded smoothly through a custom workflow. Further, our team ensured that the correct translations were delivered to the user based on their detected language.

The site’s template was build entirely on the Foundation framework and is fully responsive on three breakpoints - all the way from typography and layout right through to image delivery.

The goal of this new communication platform is to motivate, engage, and inspire current and prospective members, donors, strategic partners and staff. The redesign and implementation for Rotary’s site showcases Rotary’s global vantage point and its active engagement in communities around the world. With a responsive site design approach that provides an optimal experience across a spectrum of platforms - from desktop to tablet and mobile.

  • Authentication and user data integration with highly customized instances of Okta (SSO) and netForum (CRM) respectively
  • Bespoke interfaces for language and location detection and collection
  • Discussion groups to facilitate online community involvement among Rotarians
  • Fully-functioning social networking site, complete with the ability to form connections, private message and update CRM-integrated profile data
  • Highly granular secure link system, allowing for member permissions to be mapped to individual pages within a long list of third-party applications
  • Workflow system for content editors and translators
  • Mobile-first responsive web layout with responsive images using Foundation layout
  • Image-driven front page design utilizing parallax scroll that gracefully degrades on mobile device

The site provides the information people need, when they need it, wherever they need it, in less time. Working in close partnership with Siegel+Gale, we were able to help Rotary streamline the digital experience and communicate its global impact in a manner that is relevant and meaningful to its various audiences across all points of interaction. Rotary is now equipped for the new digital age.
